During the Holiday Season you can see..
Santa statues on every corner.
Presents wrapped under a lit up tree.
Cookies & treats stacked high.
The words Joy. Merry. Bright. Noel.
It is true. The essence of Santa brings such a wonderful feeling. It is exciting and mysterious. It is a little white lie that I am happy to tell my daughter. Children need the magic and wonder that Santa brings, in their life.
And of course it is exciting to receive presents!
It is also important to understand the spirit of giving.
Unfortunately, it is easy for the spirit of giving to be pushed to the side or even forgotten.
It is important that children are taught and understand the importance of giving. Having a spirit of giving should be an all year round thing, but the holidays are an excellent time to teach about giving.
I find that teaching my daughter about certain things is easier done with books. The pictures in the books and the story written give her an example of what I am trying to teach her. Then after we have read the book we can discuss it and I can answer any questions she has or put my own spin on it.
I have found these books that can help us all teach our children about the importance of giving throughout the holiday season and all year long.
Understanding and practicing giving is important every day of the year. The holidays are an excellent time to teach children about giving because it is happening all around us. It is also important for children to understand that it is not necessarily what is given, but the thought that counts. It sounds cliche but it is true.
