We made our first advent calendar for Christmas and my daughter LOVED it. Every morning, after finding Rosie, our Elf on a Shelf, she wanted to ‘open her day’. It was a special time. The magic of Christmas spread out through every day of the month. I enjoyed watching the sparkle in her eyes. I wanted that to continue, so we made an advent calendar for Valentine’s Day. It is fun to make valentine’s day crafts and decorations, but this is especially fun.
Surprisingly, this Valentine’s Day Advent Calendar was super easy to make. When I was planning it, I took a mental note of all the things I thought I would have to do, without the help of my daughter. Fortunately for both of us, I was completely wrong. She was able to do so much more than I had originally thought! We used a lot of recycled or inexpensive materials for this craft. Which I LOVE doing! We had fun creating this together and I can’t wait to see the surprise on her face when she ‘opens her day’ for the first fourteen days of February.
Materials Needed & How To For Valentine’s Day Advent Calendar
2 Sheets of Construction Paper
7 Toilet Paper Rolls
Hot Glue Gun & Glue
1. Cut front of cereal box out and cover with construction paper. 2. Cut toilet paper rolls in half to make 14 smaller pieces. 3. Cover one side of each toilet paper roll with a cupcake liner and slide small rubber band around to secure. 4. Using hot glue, secure uncovered side of toilet paper roll onto covered cereal box. 5. Using heart punch, punch out 14 hearts. Write #s 1-14 on hearts. 6. Glue hearts to top of each covered toilet paper roll. 7. Decorate with foam heart stickers. 8. OPTIONAL: If you want to hang your advent calendar, glue a piece of ribbon on the back with hot glue.
My daughter, who is four, did most of this project with my assistance. I wrote the numbers and worked the rubber bands, but she pretty much did the rest. I will go back in and fill each day with a surprise when she isn’t around. This took us about 30 minutes to complete. Other Option: If you are doing this project with out a child, and want to fill, I would say to glue the toilet paper rolls on first, fill, and then cover with the cupcake liners.
