11 Easy DIY Play Dough Tools To Explore Textures 17

For Christmas my daughter received this really awesome play dough set that had textured rolling pins. We have both enjoyed many hours playing with them. We create animals with their appropriate design like zebras with zebra stripes. And we make animals with opposing designs like giraffes with zebra stripes. We have also used the textured rolling pins for food, houses, etc. It is a fun set. You can get one here.

I tried looking for more but didn’t find exciting ones that I was hoping for. What does that mean? I make my own! Sometimes that thought process leads me down a hill that wasn’t worth traveling. Other times, like today, it makes me so happy that I took a DIY leap! Not only is it fun creating but it’s nice to know that I can make toys and tools for my daughter that will provide her with entertainment AND an avenue for learning. Also, typically without costing me really much money at all!

These 11 Easy DIY Play Dough Tools To Explore Textures were so much fun to play with for my 4 year old, and if I’m speaking honestly, I had fun too!!

I used two different bases for all of these tools: popsicle sticks & toilet paper rolls.

Just 5 popsicle sticks, hot glue gun & glue, and a few simple supplies is all it takes. I call them texture sticks.
How I made them is as follows:

  1. Three same shaped buttons glued on on top of each other, like street lights.
  2. I wrapped pipe cleaner around the second popsicle stick, gluing as I went.
  3. The third doesn’t require glue, just rubber bands. I wrapped three rubber bands around it randomly.
  4. The fourth I just put hot glue on the popsicle stick in a zig zag motion.
  5. The fifth is just dots of hot glue.
  6. The last, I used macaroni noodles glued on.

They all make such fun designs.

We cut out various shapes of play dough, or formed various 3-D shapes, and used these texture sticks to create designs and texture on each one.

The second set of texture tools were made on toilet paper rolls. I call them texture rolls.

  1. This one is one of my favorite of the texture rolls. I simply cut a piece of bubble wrap to the size of the toilet paper roll and glued it on! You can’t press super hard or the bubbles will pop, but it is fun none the less.
  2. The second is another with pipe cleaner. Same as with the stick, I just twisted it around the toilet paper roll and glued as I went.
  3. The third is also fun. I glued popsicle sticks about 1/4 inch apart long way. This makes a really fun design.
  4. Macaroni made a come back with this one. It looks a little messy with the hot glue but it makes a fun texture like no other texture roll.
  5. Buttons play a star role in the last texture roll. Various sizes and designed buttons glued all around.

We’ve had a lot of fun with these. I don’t expect them to last forever, but at least if one piece falls off I can just glue it back on.

We also had lots of fun with this play dough activities:
