When I got pregnant with our daughter, her room was a spare room. We had a fish tank and some exercise equipment. Obviously we took out the weight bench but we left the fish tank. The low light played the role of a night light and the sound of the water filtering was extremely relaxing. It was actually a great feature in our baby’s room. I knew she loved it because as I would rock her to sleep she would stare at it. She would watch as the fish methodically swam back and forth.
As she grew up, though, I didn’t feel safe leaving the giant glass tank filled with gallons and gallons of water in her room. We eventually took the fish tank out of her room. Ever since, though, she has been fascinated by fish and anything ‘under the sea’ related.
When I am planning and creating activities to help teach her ABCs and letter recognition, I try to incorporate things that she loves. It only makes sense that under the sea & fish became the center of this ABC matching activity.
I particularly like how this activity turned out because it has a couple different ‘steps’. I made the printables to be black and white on purpose. I like the idea of allowing my daughter to color them as she pleases. She can create the scene and even a story behind it (because that’s the stage that she’s in now, everything has a story behind it). She can choose if she wants a purple fish with yellow polka dots or if she wants stripped turquoise. It’s up to her.
The second part of the activity is to match the uppercase letters to the lowercase letters. I left this part open so we can work on particular letters, if she needs extra practice, or completely random letters. It’s a flexible but super fun activity!
